Mississippi Avenue Street Fair _ Portland Oregon

July 10th, 2008

The streets close in North Portland July 12th between Skidmore and Fremont on North Mississippi Avenue for the Mississippi Street Fair.  Three stages of music and vendors on the street with all the shops open.  The beer (http://widmer.com/Default.aspx) and margarita garden will be open all day.  Don’t miss the bbq rib off or the dunk tank as it will be spicy and wet.  A couple of my local favorites will be on the main stage.  Madgesdiq at 2:30 and Lifesavas at 6:20.  Sneakin’ out is a good call on the side lot stage at 8:00.  The Fair is carbon neutral thanks to the good people at Pacific Power Blue (http://www.pacificpower.net/Homepage/Homepage35754.html).  July 12th 2008 from 10am – 7pm between Skidmore and Fremont on Mississippi Avenue in North Portland.

Firehouse Restaurant _ Dekum Street pdx

June 6th, 2008

The old firehouse (1911) on Dekum Street has been reborn and will open as an Italian influenced restaurant focusing on local meats, sustainable fish and regional produce.   Dekum Street has represented many things over the years and the neighborhood welcomes this new addition.  Across the street from Firehouse is Good Neighbor Pizzeria (http://pdxgarage.com/nereviews/?p=9).  Good Neighbor will certainty live up to its name and I can only imagine that Firehouse will return the favor.  I see these two swapping veggies when in a crunch and borrowing a cup of flour when needed.  Representing the neighbors that have made this place become what it is today.  Firehouse will be open for dinner Wednesday through Sunday by late June.  711 NE Dekum St.  Portland Oregon

Thai Noon _ Portland Oregon _ Alberta Street

May 31st, 2008

Thai Noon (http://thainoon.com)  is an industrial spot for the young and talented to stop and get a healthy bite.  The garage doors let in a nice breeze on sunny days.  Sidewalk seating available, but I have yet to be lucky enough for one of these seats.  The people watching on the street is top notch.  Speaking of top notch, start with the salad rolls (chicken or tofu).  They are refreshingly mouth watering.  The mint will put a spring in your step.  I could eat a whole plate of these.  Mixed vegetable and mushroom egg rolls with sweet and sour sauce are amazing any day.  For noodles I stick with the classic Pad Thai and without a question head for the Pineapple Fried Rice when needing comfort food.  Daily specials are available and have treated us well in the past.  Definitely don’t pass on the salad rolls with sweet and sour sauce.  Lunch specials Monday – Friday for $6.50 are one of the better deals in town (11:30a-3:00p).  Available for take out, just call ahead…503.282.2021.  Happy Hour in the Lounge every day except Last Thursday (http://www.artonalberta.org/) 4:30 – 6:30p.  Open until 10pm weeknights and 10:30 on the weekends (closes 30 minutes early in the winter).  2635 NE Alberta Street, Portland Oregon.

Mississippi Pizza and Atlantis Lounge _ North Portland

April 29th, 2008

Mississippi Pizza offers a cozy atmosphere with a mixture of vintage chairs, benches and tables.  Grab a slice, order one of several specialty pizzas, or create your own.  The thin crust, fresh ingredients and perfect amount of sauce makes this one of my favorite lunch spots to catch a couple of slices and a soda for under $5.  Don’t just think of this as a lunch spot though.  The Atlantis Lounge in the back features eight beer taps, wine and exotic cocktails http://www.mississippipizza.com/atlantis.html .  Live music plays the lounge seven nights a week starting at 6pm.  Get in before 8pm and avoid paying a cover.  Test your spelling skills every Monday night when the lounge hosts Portland’s Spelling Bee.  Happy Hour everyday from 6-8pm and all night every Tuesday.  3552 North Mississippi Avenue, Portland, Oregon 503.288.3231

Steakadelphia is closing May 3rd!!!! Get it while you can…

April 28th, 2008

Steakadelphia on Dekum is closing May 3rd.  Call your friends and family and get one before the doors close.  The owner will be moving to Philly when the sign comes down.  If you have never been, go with the classic philly and provolone.  For adventure and thrills, hit up the cheez wiz and supreme it with lettuce and tomatos.  Phone in your order as the lines are starting to form.  I’m thinking of ordering a dozen and freezing them.  I don’t think I can go cold turkey from these juicy steak sandwiches.  Park on Dekum Street as there is no parking on MLK.  Closing May 3, 2008 L  6800 NE MLK BLVD Portland Oregon 503.247.7211.

Clays Smokehouse and Grill _ Portland Oregon

April 23rd, 2008

Clays smokes all of its meats, bird and seafood in house.  They do it right and don’t skimp on the hickory, mesquite or alder wood.  Everything is smoked, simmered and broiled to perfection.  The poppy seed coleslaw is to die for and I always get a side to go as I know I will crave its likeness soon after leaving this fine BBQ joint.  Don’t leave before trying desert.  I split the Peanut Butter Pie with my companion and it was delicious and bountiful.  If you want BBQ and don’t want to be disappointed on flavor, go to Clay’s.
